Pair of Malayan tigers coming to Virginia Zoo

Friday - 11/23/2012, 7:44am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. - The Virginia Zoo is acquiring a new pair of Malayan tigers to help it establish a long-term breeding program.

Zoo officials say Christopher and Clairborne are expected to arrive in the next few weeks.

Christopher is a year old and will come from the San Diego Zoo. Clairborne is 2 years old and will come from the Bronx Zoo in New York.

To make room for the newcomers, current resident tigers Kadar and Tahan will move to the Naples Zoo in Naples, Fla.

Zoo executive director Greg Bockheim says Kadar and Tahan will be missed. But the zoo's tiger facility was designed with breeding in mind.

Bockheim says zoo officials need to take advantage of breeding capabilities with threatened species whenever they can.
