George Washington Parkway reopens after fatal accident

WASHINGTON – The George Washington Parkway was shut down for several hours in Alexandria, Va., following a fatal crash Monday morning.

Police say the accident occurred at 5:15 a.m. A driver died at the scene, and a passenger was taken to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

The accident investigation closed the parkway to southbound traffic at Stratford Lane. Northbound traffic was being diverted to Route 1.

Lanes in both directions reopened at about 11:45 a.m.
