U.Va. fireplaces back in service, chimneys fixed

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Fireplaces are back in service in the University of Virginia's historic Lawn and Range rooms.

Vice president for management and budget Colette Sheehy says repairs to the Lawn and Range chimneys have been completed. Sprinklers also have been installed in the rooms.

The university banned using the fireplaces after inspectors found cracks in flue linings and chimneys last year.

The Daily Progress ( http://bit.ly/Z2fXUZ) reports that Sheehy provided details of the repair project Wednesday to the Board of Visitors' Buildings and Grounds Committee.

Sheehy says the liners on 62 chimneys serving 106 fireplaces were replaced.

The rooms date to the school's 1819 founding. The burning hearths have been a longtime tradition, even after the university installed central heating in the early 20th century.
