Va. man gets prison for faking clients' tax returns

Tuesday - 11/6/2012, 3:39am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Beach tax preparer has been sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for falsifying clients' federal income tax returns.

Forty-nine-year-old Paul Zimmerman Jr. was sentenced Monday in federal court in Norfolk.

Federal prosecutors say the Internal Revenue Service began investigating after errors and irregularities were found in returns filed by clients of Zimmerman's tax preparation service in Norfolk.

The investigation revealed that without his clients' knowledge, among the claims Zimmerman made on the returns were illegitimate rental properties, inflated expenses and mortgage interest payments on properties without mortgages.

The falsely reported information resulted in lowered tax liabilities or generated refunds for clients.
