Va. man exonerated of rape, cleared to vote, dies

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Charles City area man exonerated of a 1978 wrongful rape conviction and regained his right to vote in the November election has died after a long battle with bone cancer.

According to the Wilson & Associates Funeral Service website, 57-year-old Bennett Barbour died Thursday

The Virginia Supreme Court exonerated Barbour in May after DNA tests conducted in 2010 on material from the case didn't find Barbour's DNA. He was released on parole in 1983.

Barbour thought he was eligible to vote after he was exonerated, but Gov. Bob McDonnell had to restore his voting rights because he has other, less-serious felony convictions.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports ( that the effects of his fight against cancer were evident when Barbour cast his ballot for President Barack Obama on Nov. 6.
