Co-presidents named for D-Day Memorial

Friday - 11/2/2012, 12:17pm  ET

ROANOKE, Va. - The National D-Day Memorial Foundation has not one, but two new presidents.

The Roanoke Times reports ( http://bit.ly/TfGFpq) that the foundation's board has named April Cheek-Messier and Jeffrrey Fulgham co-presidents. They had been serving as vice presidents of the foundation.

They will replace Robin Reed, who resigned last month to pursue other opportunities.

Cheek-Messier has been with the foundation since January 2001, about five months before the memorial opened with great fanfare and a speech from President George W. Bush. Fulgham joined two years later.

Since opening more than 11 years ago, the memorial in Bedford County has struggled financially, especially during the recession, when visitation declined. Part of the co-presidents' task will be to make the memorial more financially sound.
