Sharpton bringing voter protection tour to Va.

Tuesday - 10/9/2012, 12:00pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - The Rev. Al Sharpton is heading to Richmond for what he calls a "voter engagement" tour.

The activist clergyman is scheduled to lead a program Tuesday with local religious and political leaders, including Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones.

Sharpton said the program is intended to create an infrastructure in Richmond to continue what he calls voter education and protection. The drive is promoted by the National Action Network and it's aimed at combatting what Sharpton calls restrictive new voting requirements.

Sharpton and others have accused proponents of voter ID laws of attempting to suppress votes in the November election. Voter ID proponents say they are aimed at voter fraud.
