RICHMOND, Va. - The FBI's Richmond Division has a new leader.

Jeffrey C. Mazanec, a 24-year veteran of the bureau, has been named special agent in charge. FBI director Robert Mueller III made the announcement Monday.

Mazanec most recently served as deputy assistant director of public affairs at FBI headquarters in Washington. He has held a variety of positions with the FBI, many of them dealing with counterterrorism. He also has taught graduate-level national security courses at the National Defense University and helped establish the FBI School of Intelligence at Quantico.

Mazanec received a bachelor's degree from Liberty University, a law degree from the College of William and Mary, and a master's in national security strategy from the National War College.

He succeeds Michael Morehart, who retired.
