RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia is becoming a popular destination for tourists from other countries.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said Wednesday that overseas visitors spent a record $390 million in the state in 2011. That's up 21 percent from 2010.
Tourists from Canada spent more than $148 million in 2011, an increase of nearly 11 percent from 2010.
The figures are based on economic data from The U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, the Survey of International Air Travelers and Statistics Canada.
Revenue from domestic visitors topped $20 billion in 2011, an 8 percent increase from the previous year.
