Petition drive fights Dulles Toll Road hike

WASHINGTON – A petition to fight toll rate increases on the Dulles Toll Road is collecting signatures as public hearings begin on the proposed rate hikes.

It’s going to cost twice as much to drive the Dulles Toll Road under a proposal to increase rates incrementally over the next three years. Some drivers say that won’t happen without a fight.

The online petition proposes the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority turn over guardianship of the Dulles Toll Road to the state of Virginia.

Petition signers believe an unfair portion of their tolls will go to construct Metrorail’s Silver Line extension to Dulles International Airport. The Airports Authority oversees that project.

The first of three public hearings on the toll increases will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Va.

Right now the Dulles Toll Road’s main plaza and ramp tolls cost $2.25 for two-axle vehicles. Under the proposed rate increase tolls would rise to the following:

  • $2.75 in 2013
  • $3.50 in 2014
  • $4.50 in 2015
