EVMS, William and Mary ask for $1M to study merger

Friday - 11/30/2012, 4:44pm  ET

NORFOLK, Va. - The College of William and Mary and Eastern Virginia Medical School are asking for $1 million in state funds to continue studying the idea of merging the two schools.

In July, the institutions agreed to explore the feasibility of having EVMS become the William and Mary School of Medicine.

The schools said Friday that they are asking for an amendment in the state's 2013-14 budget to keep exploring the idea.

The Virginian-Pilot reports ( http://bit.ly/SkF9TS) that each school has formed a task force to explore the possible partnership and hired a consultant.

The College of William and Mary is located in Williamsburg and EVMS is in Norfolk. EVMS has no correlating undergraduate institution.

If the schools decide to proceed, it would require the approval of the General Assembly and the governor.
