VA Fed chief visits NC to talk economy, turnaround

Monday - 5/7/2012, 1:37pm  ET

GREENSBORO, N.C. - One of the dozen top central bankers in the country is talking with North Carolina business and government leaders and listening to community college students.

Jeffrey Lacker is president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va. He's speaking in Greensboro on Monday evening, then visiting Guilford Technical Community College students to hear about their education and job training.

Lacker is one of 12 regional Federal Reserve chiefs around the country who together set the country's key interest rates. He said last week that income, consumer spending and total economic output have grown since 2009's lows, but the turnaround has disappointed many.

Lacker says two holdups have been the many problems in the housing market and the mismatch between unemployed workers and the skills needed by companies seeking to hire.
