ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. - More than 30 cats at the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter have been infected in an outbreak of feline herpes.

Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kristin Wilda says homes are being sought for 16 infected cats. Two volunteers have taken in 14 felines.

Wilda tells the Daily Press ( that the shelter must be cleaned and disinfected daily for at least 30 days to eliminate the airborne virus. Any cats that remain in the shelter after Sunday will be euthanized. No cats will be accepted for at least five weeks.

The virus causes upper respiratory infections. It can't be transmitted to people or other animals.

Smithfield veterinarian Betty Payne says feline herpes can be managed with proper care but it can't be cured.
