CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sperry Marine is eliminating about 50 jobs at its Naval and Marine Systems Division in Charlottesville.
Sperry Marine says in a statement to WVIR-TV ( http://bit.ly/y4Rge4) that the layoffs announced Tuesday are among 400 companywide.
The Charlottesville-based subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Corp. provides navigation and ship-control technology.
The company attributes the job cuts to expected additional cuts in defense spending. It also cites the current business outlook for electronic systems.
More than 300 employees opted to participate in a voluntary reduction plan after the company informed them last October that it planned 800 positions by the end of January.
The laid-off workers' last day on the job will be Jan. 31.
