Va. cities, US bases named 'Tree Cities'

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Fifty-one cities, towns and military installations in Virginia are being recognized for their attention to trees.

The Virginia Department of Forestry says the 51 have achieved Tree City USA certification after satisfying guidelines from the Arbor Day Foundation. The yardstick involves the existence of a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance and an Arbor Day observance or proclamation, among other criteria.

The tree cities include Abingdon in southwest Virginia, Arlington and Alexandria in the Washington region and Naval Station Norfolk, among dozens more.

The foundation reports that 48 percent of Virginians live in a place designated a Tree City. The state has more than 16 million acres of forestland.
