CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A Charlottesville woman faces charges of embezzling from a private school for emotionally troubled and mentally ill students.

Albemarle County police tell media outlets that 40-year-old Mary P. Anderson is accused of embezzling about $27,000 from the Lafayette School and Treatment Center between April 27, 2008, and Sept. 26, 2011. She served as the school's director until she resigned in October 2011.

Police say Anderson's successors, Barret and Charles Stump, discovered discrepancies in the school's financial records and notified authorities in March.

Barret Stump says the school laid off three employees last month because of financial problems.

Anderson remains free on personal recognizance bond.
