Former Olympic gold medalist on drug charges

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Former Olympic champion diver Chantelle Newbery was sentenced for drug offenses Wednesday for the second time in three months.

The 37-year-old Newbery, who won the 10-meter platform gold medal at Athens in 2004, pleaded guilty in a magistrates’ court to two counts of possessing a dangerous drug and one count of failing to properly dispose of a needle or syringe. She received 18 months’ probation.

Newbery appeared in the same court in July for similar offenses relating to possession of methylamphetamine. She was placed on a drug diversion program following that case.
