LONDON (AP) - U.S. gymnast Sam Mikulak will have surgery this month to correct an ankle problem that has bothered him since the Olympic trials in June.
The 19-year-old Mikulak finished fifth in the Olympic vault final Tuesday, sticking both vaults despite a heavily taped left ankle that he sprained during the trials.
Mikulak recovered in time for the Olympics, participating in five events during team qualifying and four in the team finals, where the U.S. finished a disappointing fifth.
He will return home to California after the games for surgery. He expects to be fully recovered when he returns in the fall to Michigan, where he won the 2011 NCAA all-around title as a freshman.
