Maryland nursing home struggling through third day of heat and no electricity

Monday - 7/2/2012, 5:47pm  ET

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Residents are coping as best they can at the Springvale Terrace nursing home and senior center in Silver Spring.

Not a whole lot is functioning. There is no air conditioning, no cable and no automatic doors for elderly residents using walkers.

Director Antonio Hill says window units have been installed to cool rooms. He says the staff had to dump spoiling food from refrigerators and freezers in nursing units _ sometimes over the loud objections of residents who insisted their melting ice cream was still good.

Generators have been providing electricity in common rooms, where TVs showed movies on old VHS tapes, including the 1932 classic "Grand Hotel."
