National Chanukah Menorah lighting scheduled for Tuesday

WASHINGTON — The National Chanukah Menorah on the Ellipse will be lit in a ceremony on Tuesday.

Vice President Joseph Biden will deliver remarks at the menorah lighting event, which begins at 4 p.m. The gates open to the public at 1:45 pm.

The ceremony will include music by the U.S. Army Band, The Three Cantors and Alex Clare.

The eight-day Chanukah festival celebrates religious freedom and the triumph of light over darkness and spirituality over materialism, and it commemorates the ancient victory of Jewish forces over Greeks in the Holy Land.

The event is free, but tickets are required. They’re available online or by calling 202-335- 5600.

The menorah is located south of the White House in President’s Park South (the Ellipse).

Tuesday’s lighting marks the 35th anniversary of the first lighting in front of the White House in 1979. Biden will be the highest-ranking administration official to attend the menorah lighting since President Carter took part in the first one.
