D.C. ranks highly on safe places to live

WASHINGTON -- The District ranked highly on a recent survey of safest states (and D.C.) to live in.

The District of Columbia came out as the fifth safest after Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Hawaii, according to WalletHub, a financial website.

Rhode Island, Iowa, Illinois, Connecticut and New York took spots six through 10.

Twenty-six metrics were taken into account. Some of them included workplace safety, traffic safety, suicide rates and law enforcement employees.

Maryland comes in at 16 and Virginia at 21. Move the mouse cursor over the map below to see how other states ranked.
