Schwartz to run for D.C. mayor as independent

Tuesday - 6/10/2014, 6:51am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former D.C. councilmember Carol Schwartz is running for mayor.

Schwartz, a longtime Republican, announced Monday that she plans to run as an independent in the November general election.

The 70-year-old Schwartz has been out of politics since 2008. She ran for mayor four times previously but never became particularly close to winning.

Schwartz says she decided to run because she's dissatisfied with the two leading candidates, Democratic nominee Muriel Bowser and independent David Catania. Both are D.C. councilmembers. She declined to elaborate on her feelings about the candidates.

Schwartz is a longtime rival of Catania, who backed a Republican primary challenger who defeated her in 2008. She and Bowser both denied that there was any arrangement between them to take votes away from Catania, who is also a Republican-turned-independent.
