Weather map that resembles a fish goes viral

WASHINGTON – With references to “Sharknado,” local Twitter accounts were abuzz Wednesday about a weather map that looked a lot like a fish with an open mouth.

ABC7 meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts tweeted the wind map early Wednesday afternoon with information that the D.C. region could see a threat of damaging winds with storms that may move through the area Wednesday night.

Ricketts said the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center provides the maps showing which areas of the country have a chance to see potentially damaging winds.

“It could look like nothing one day. It could look like a big circle one day. That’s just the coincidence of the pattern that it happens to look like a big fish,” Ricketts said of the shape of Wednesday’s map.

The dark red areas on the map show the areas that have the best chance to see damaging winds.

The forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms developing after 8 p.m. Those scattered storms will continue overnight, but most of the WTOP listening area should see partly cloudy skies by dawn. The temperature overnight will be in the 60s.

Thursday will be mostly sunny with a chance for isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high temperature may reach the low 80s.
