DC extends deadline to enroll in health plans

Wednesday - 4/16/2014, 3:52pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia's health insurance exchange is once again extending the deadline for people to sign up for insurance without paying a tax penalty.

The exchange announced Wednesday that people can continue to enroll through April 30. The deadline had previously been extended through Tuesday.

In order to avoid the penalty, residents must sign a statement saying they tried to enroll in an insurance plan before March 31, when open enrollment ended. That could mean they called but were unable to wait on hold or tried to sign up in person but couldn't make it through a long line.

Exchange officials have said there were thousands of city residents who didn't enroll by the end of March.
