WASHINGTON — No need to hail a cab when your smartphone can do it for you. By downloading the app Hailo, area commuters have the opportunity to receive a free taxi ride all weekend.

In honor of the service’s launch in Alexandria, Va., first-time riders have a free $20 credit to spend on a ride in the D.C. area, so long as they provide the ALX20 code.

The mayor of Alexandria celebrated the expansion of the service Friday in front of Alexandria City Hall. Although the service isn’t new to D.C., this recent expansion gives commuters more transportation options.

Hailo is partnering with Alexandria Yellow Cab, according to a news release.

The president of Alexandria Yellow Cab Spencer Kimball says in the release that the partnership will provide benefits for both the taxi drivers and commuters.

“This partnership is a win-win for our businesses because it helps us get more drivers on the road and more Alexandrians where they need to be in a very efficient way,” Kimball says.

In The Capital reports that returning users won’t be receiving free rides, but will instead get a discount through email.
