DC police: Infant's death now ruled a homicide

Sunday - 1/19/2014, 3:50pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- District of Columbia police say the September death of an infant has been ruled a homicide, and police have issued an arrest warrant for the child's mother.

Police say the homicide ruling was made by the medical examiner's office this month in the death of 1-month-old Hakeem Brown, who was found unconscious and not breathing.

The cause was determined to be Promethazine intoxication. That medication is used to treat allergic reactions and symptoms of the common cold, though health officials say it can cause children to stop breathing and die.

Police have issued an arrest warrant charging 31-year-old Tisheena Brown with second-degree murder. A D.C. police spokesman identified Brown as the child's mother.

A woman who answered the phone at a public listing for Brown declined to comment on Sunday.
