WASHINGTON - A fire ripped through a home where the owner was hoarding items in Southeast D.C. early Thursday morning.

The blaze occurred on M Street near Minnesota Avenue and the homeowner was able to escape unhurt, NBC Washington reports.

Investigators haven't figured out what caused the fire but hoarding conditions were found inside the home. It is not yet clear if the hoarding conditions played a role in the fire.

The homeowner told NBC Washington that he woke up to the smell of smoke around 4 a.m. He then ran outside and banged on the doors of nearby homes for help.

Officials have not released information about the estimated cost of damage to the home.
