WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia won't be extending its deadline for people to enroll in health plans through the city's insurance exchange. But officials say the city will work with those who miss the deadline to ensure they get coverage effective Jan. 1.

Monday is the deadline for people to enroll in a health plan if they want coverage on Jan. 1. The federal government is extending the deadline until Tuesday for those who enroll using the federal website.

The district has its own health exchange, as do many states. Exchange director Mila Kofman says the three major providers selling insurance in the district have agreed to accept premiums as late as Jan. 15 for coverage starting Jan. 1. So even though the deadline is Monday, there's still time to enroll.
