UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County prosecutors say a District of Columbia police officer has been indicted on attempted murder charges.
Authorities say Samson Lawrence struck his wife in the head with a metal lamp post during an argument last month and threatened to cut her with knives.
It wasn't immediately clear if the 45-year-old Lawrence had a lawyer, and a telephone listing for him was disconnected. He has been released on $200,000 bond.
Assistant Police Chief Peter Newsham says Lawrence joined the department in 1990 and is a patrol officer. He says the department placed him on non-contact status after learning of the allegations. That means he has no police powers on the street.
Newsham says the police department's hiring process has changed from when Lawrence joined the department.
