WASHINGTON - After a weekend of record-breaking temperatures, a cold front from the west is moving into the WTOP listening area, bringing with it heavy rains and the possibility of tornadoes.
A tornado warning has been issued until noon for Spotsylvania and Stafford counties and the City of Fredericksburg.
"The entire listening area is under a tornado watch," said ABC7 meteorologist Doug Hill.
The full force of the rain is expected within an hour, said ABC7 meteorologist Lauryn Ricketts at 11:05 a.m.
The rain moved into WTOP's outer suburbs Monday morning, with sustained winds of 20 mph at 9 a.m.
"The line of storms is torrential. They're backed up," Hill said.
The National Weather Service posted a tornado watch until 5 p.m. for the WTOP listening area. A watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado.
The following areas are under a watch:
- Anne Arundel
- Baltimore City
- Baltimore County
- Frederick County, Md.
- Prince George's
- Queen Anne's
- St. Mary's
- Falls Church
- King George
- Prince William
Earlier tornado warnings were posted for Washington County, Md., for Frederick and Clarke counties in Virginia and for the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Those warnings have been canceled.
The rain is expected to be gone by Monday evening. Up to an inch could fall.
The rain is needed. The rainfall deficit this year at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 1.23 inches, and the deficit since Sept. 1 is 3.15 inches, according to meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli.
Monday's storms come after a record-setting, warm weekend.
The 89-degree temperature at Dulles International Airport Sunday broke a record of 86 set in 1995.
On Saturday, a temperature of 90 broke an 88-degree record set in 2007.
Tuesday will bring "a gorgeous fall day" with temperatures around 70, Hill said.
MONDAY: Strong storms possible. Highs of 72 to 78.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny, less humid, highs of 69 to 74.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy and continued cool, near 70
THURSDAY: Mix of clouds and sun with the chance of a shower. Near 70.
