Police: Woman sexually assaulted, robbed in Chinatown

WASHINGTON – A woman was sexually assaulted in the District’s Chinatown area early Thursday morning, police say.

The woman was walking in the 700 block of H Street NW around 5 a.m. when a man approached her from behind and forced her into an alley, police say. He then sexually assaulted her and robbed her.

Her attacker is described as a black man with a dark complexion and a thin build. He was about 24-years-old and wearing a white T-shirt, gray pants and black shoes.

ABC 7 reports that the woman was on her way to catch a bus when she was punched and choked by her attacker and then dragged away into a nearby alley.

The assault left those in the Chinatown area with a mixed reaction Thursday afternoon.

“I’ve never been down here that late and I usually get out around like 10 or 11. There’s usually a lot of cops. I feel like with the cops’ presence it would probably deter that kind of behavior, but it’s unfortunate that happened,” says Emily Rackinger, who works in the area.

“I’m very surprised because this is not like an area where there’s not a lot of people at that time of the morning. Somebody was out here and somebody saw something,” says Sam Jones who frequents the area’s restaurants.

Police ask that anyone with information about the attacker or attacker to call 202- 727-9099 or send a text message to 50411.
