Talk show host calls for D.C. march featuring loaded rifles

Tuesday - 5/7/2013, 5:25am  ET

WASHINGTON Marches, rallies and protests converge on Washington every year to demonstrate beliefs and attempt to effect change.

A march planned for Independence Day this year follows that pattern with one notable exception: The participants vow to carry loaded rifles.

Adam Kokesh, a former Marine turned talk show/podcast host, has invited his listeners to what he calls the Open Carry March on Washington.

He writes that participants will cross the Memorial Bridge and march around the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the White House.

"This is an act of civil disobedience, not a permitted event," he writes on his website.

"We will march with rifles loaded & slung across our backs to put the government on notice that we will not be intimidated & cower in submission to tyranny."

He insists violence will not come from people on the march.

"This will be a non-violent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent. Should we meet physical resistance, we will peacefully turn back, having shown that free people are not welcome in Washington ...," Kokesh writes.

D.C. police and other law enforcement agencies are aware of the planned march. A police spokesperson on Monday declined to say how the department would handle it or if representatives had been in direct contact with Kokesh.

The Open Carry March, as currently devised, would violate D.C. laws.
