Police: Va. man tried to rape woman to lose his virginity

Wednesday - 4/10/2013, 3:49pm  ET

WASHINGTON - A 23-year-old Springfield, Va., man is accused of kidnapping and assaulting a woman in D.C. in an attempt to rape her and lose his virginity.

According to court documents, the victim told police she was walking alone from a party to her off-campus apartment April 8 around 1 a.m. in the 2500 block of P Street NW when a man came up behind her and forced her into a wooded area. The man reportedly told her he had a gun.

The woman told police that the suspect, Matthew Gabramadhin, pinned her down and asked her for sex -- even offering her money, according to court documents. She says she refused, screamed and fought until the suspect ran away.

Police say Gabramadhin lost his shoes during the struggle, and they were later recovered near the scene. The victim reported that at one point, the suspect shoved either a sock or a hat into her mouth to keep her from screaming.

Police were able to track down Gabramadhin on 30th Street NW later that morning. Officials say he fled and jumped into the canal, where police were able to apprehend him.

The suspect told authorities he had been at a bar near 11th and U streets earlier that night, and that he is on probation for possession of a controlled substance. He also told police that the events of the night are blurry.

This story has been modified to clarify that the victim has not been identified as a Georgetown student by police.
