WASHINGTON - Before Stephen Strasburg threw a strike to open the Washington Nationals' season, an American hero -- Clint Romesha -- tossed the ceremonial first pitch.
Just last month, former Army Staff Sgt. Romesha was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in Afghanistan.
He was cited for conspicuous gallantry in an Oct. 3, 2009 battle in eastern Afghanistan.
His combat outpost was surrounded by Taliban fighters, but Romesha managed to take out enemy machine gun positions. He saved the lives of fellow soldiers and also scrambled through heavy fire to recover fallen U.S. troops.
Romesha of Minot, N.D., and his wife Tammy have three kids. He works as a field safety specialist with an oilfield construction company.
