WASHINGTON – Your daily commute might be getting easier.

Metro unveiled a new service Monday aimed at cutting back on crowd sizes during peak travel times.

“We hope this will improve the commutes of our riders,” announced Metro General Manager Richard Sarles. “In addition to noticing less crowding and more reliable service, many riders will also save some money by eliminating the bus to rail transfer to reach downtown.”

The rush hour A9 MetroExtra route runs from Livingston to McPherson Square.

The service has stops along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue before making its way to downtown D.C.

Northbound buses are set to operate every 15 minutes during morning rush hour. Southbound buses will also operate every 15 minutes during evening rush hours.

“Not only will it make travel time much shorter, it will help residents to reach jobs downtown more easily,” said D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh who described transportation as the “life blood” of a community.

The new service is just one of many changes taking effect across the Metro system as part of its $5 million Better Bus initiative.

The A line routes see more than 14,000 weekday riders.
