Driver in fatal hit-and-run charged with killing 71-year-old woman

WASHINGTON – Police have identified the 71-year-old victim of Thursday’s fatal hit-and-run accident.

Officials say Ruby Whitfied of Northeast D.C. died after being hit by a silver 2010 Mercury Mountaineer traveling eastbound on Florida Avenue NE. She was walking in a marked crosswalk.

The driver, 32-year-old Joel Russell Bromwell of Annapolis, Md. fled the scene, but was later located on Elliot and F streets in Northeast.

He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The investigation is ongoing.

WASHINGTON – A 71-year-old woman is dead after a fatal hit-and-run in Northeast D.C. Thursday night.

Police say they received the call at 8:21 p.m. on Thursday night that a pedestrian had been hit in the 1100 block of Florida Avenue NE.

The victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The driver left the scene, and officers began searching for a silver Mercury SUV with possible front-end damage.

Eventually police found the vehicle in the 600 block of Elliot Street NE, and arrested the man they say was driving.

There’s no word yet on the exact charges against the driver.
