D.C. plans city's first 'living building'

Friday - 12/14/2012, 9:21am  ET

WASHINGTON - City officials in Washington say they plan to create the district's first "living building."

The building will produce as much energy as it uses through solar power, geothermal energy and other alternative energy technologies.

The Living Building Challenge is one of 12 pilot programs awarded $4.5 million in grants Thursday as part of the Sustainable D.C. Budget Challenge. The Living Building Challenge focuses on aspects such as location, water and energy use and materials to create a structure that is environmentally friendly and enjoyable.

The Washington Post reports ( http://wapo.st/Ug4hdL) that district officials said a public school may be renovated for the project, but they have not decided on a location.

The budget challenge competition encourages city agencies to create projects to bring the city closer to achieving its sustainability goals.
