WASHINGTON - There's a new member of the D.C. Council, but she wasn't elected by the voters.

Anita Bonds was appointed to the council by the Democratic State Committee on Monday night and sworn into office early Tuesday morning.

It's the first time in more than six months that there isn't a vacancy on the council after two members resigned and pleaded guilty to felonies.

Bonds, a former aide to Marion Barry, will serve as interim councilmember until a citywide special election is held in late April. It will be the fourth special election in the city in a year.

Bonds is a long-time political activist and works for M.C. Dean, a company that has millions of dollars in contracts with the city. She is also the chair of the state committee that appointed her to the council.
