Report: Gray staffers allegedly promised to hide campaign donations

WASHINGTON – Federal investigators reportedly are looking into allegations that members of D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray’s campaign staff encouraged supporters to donate money by promising their donations wouldn’t be reported.

Sources tell The Washington Post that staffers may have solicited city employees and contractors who were afraid then-Mayor Adrian Fenty would retaliate if they backed Gray.

Sources tell the Post that FBI investigators – which have been probing Gray’s 2010 election campaign for months – are trying to determine whether donations were illegally concealed.

A separate analysis by the paper found that dozens of donor names from an internal Gray campaign list could not be found in filings with the city’s Office of Campaign Finance.

Gray tells the paper he’s “astounded” by the latest allegations.
