WASHINGTON - A former employee at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, has pleaded guilty in a scheme involving visa applications.

Forty-four-year-old Christian Paredes Uzcategui of Caracas pleaded guilty to receiving an illegal gratuity by a public official Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He faces up to two years in prison at sentencing Dec. 7.

Authorities say Paredes received more than $5,000 from a person who acted as a facilitator for Venezuelan applicants seeking non-immigrant U.S. visas. In exchange, Paredes provided information about the facilitator's clients.

Prosecutors say Paredes' duties at the embassy included screening information to organize and track non-immigrant visa requests.
