D.C. deputy mayor for education leaving post

Friday - 10/19/2012, 12:27pm  ET

WASHINGTON - The District of Columbia's deputy mayor for education is stepping down to take a job in New York.

Mayor Vincent Gray said Thursday that De'Shawn Wright will serve as New York's deputy secretary for education. Wright's chief of staff, Jennifer Leonard, will begin serving as interim deputy mayor for education in November.

Wright is leaving as officials are trying to plan for the future of traditional D.C. public and charter schools.

Wright joined Gray's team in 2011. He previously worked for New York City Department of Education and served as chief policy adviser to Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker.
