D.C. called 1 of friendliest cities for pedestrians

Thursday - 9/6/2012, 2:51pm  ET

WASHINGTON - The nation's capital has been named one of the friendliest cities in the country for pedestrians and bicyclists.

District of Columbia officials announced Thursday that the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has designated the district as a Walk Friendly Community.

The designation goes to towns and cities that promote walking and pedestrian safety through programs and policies. The group has given the Walk-Friendly designation to 33 communities so far.

The district is one of 10 cities nationwide to receive a Gold-level designation. Only one city, Seattle, has earned the higher Platinum ranking.

The program is funded by FedEx and the Federal Highway Administration.
