WASHINGTON – A 5.8-magnitude earthquake rocked D.C.one year ago Thursday, and today there are still signs of damage at local landmarks, including the National Cathedral.

Pinnacles on the scaffolding of the cathedral’s towers are being repaired, and two of them sit inside black fencing in front of the church. A number of flying buttresses and a gargoyle also were damaged.

The cathedral has launched a fundraising campaign called “Restore the Glory!” It hopes to raise $100,000 to continue restoration and help fund programming.

The campaign runs through midnight on Aug. 23, the anniversary date of the quake. According to the National Cathedral’s fundraising page, the restoration goals include the following:

  • Help fund the restoration of the damaged pinnacles, flying buttresses, and gargoyles;
  • Provide the funds for the cathedral to focus on its core work and ministry;
  • Show support for the cathedral’s work “as a catalyst for spiritual harmony in our nation, renewal in the churches, reconciliation among faiths, and compassion in our world.”
