WASHINGTON - A former campaign aide to D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to make straw contributions to candidates for federal and local offices, including the mayor.
Eugenia Clarke Harris, a public relations executive known as Jeanne, told a judge Tuesday afternoon she funneled $653,800 in illegal funds to Gray's 2010 campaign, but that it wasn't her idea.
"The plan was developed by another person," she said.
Harris faces up to 37 months in prison and a fine of $60,000. She will be sentenced at a later date.
The guilty plea is the latest admission of wrongdoing among aides to Gray's 2010 campaign.
Federal authorities have been investigating the mayor's campaign since shortly after he took office last year. Gray has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
