Court to finalize D.C. control on special ed busing

WASHINGTON - A federal judge in Washington says he will give final approval to city control over special-education transportation after years of court supervision.

U.S. District Court Judge Paul Friedman said at a hearing on Wednesday that he will formally end federal court supervision by dismissing a lawsuit brought by students and their parents.

Bus service for special needs students had been under federal court supervision for years as part of a 1995 class action lawsuit. Problems with transportation included an insufficient number of buses to transport students and problems with punctuality and management.

Officials said in June that city has demonstrated it can provide safe and reliable school transportation to more than 3,300 special education students.
