Army probes for live ordnance on Md. installation

Tuesday - 10/2/2012, 12:39pm  ET

ABERDEEN, Md. - A search for live explosives is prompting some changes for workers and visitors to Aberdeen Proving Ground near Aberdeen.

The Army installation said Tuesday that the Route 715 gate near the visitor center will be closed Friday nights and weekends while workers look for unexploded ordnance nearby. The search is expected to take eight weeks.

Motorists will be directed to the Route 22 gate during the closure periods.

An installation official says old maps have revealed that the land bordering a nearby pond was once a demolition area. He says the area must be cleared of any live explosives before it can be developed.

The pond is across the road from a golf course that is part of the military installation. The golf course will remain open.
