WASHINGTON - The Fourth of July is a few days away and D.C. officials are reminding residents how to enjoy and purchase fireworks safely in the District.

As reported by DCist, it seems the majority of fireworks being (legally) sold in D.C. are in Wards 4 through 8.

Businesses listed have been issued a firework permit and passed the FEMS Fire Prevention Division/Fire Marshal inspection.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety provides a few tips on using fireworks safely:

  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
  • Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket)
  • Only use fireworks as intended. Don't try to alter them or combine them.
  • Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
  • Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.

To report a suspected illegal firework vendor or a licensed vendor suspected of selling illegal fireworks, the city urges residents to call 911. Tips can also be provided anonymously to the Metropolitan Police Department by calling 1-888-919-CRIME or sending a text to 50-411.
