Weekend Wakeup: Susan G. Komen, GW Parkway closure to jam weekend traffic

Tim Bracken, wtop.com

WASHINGTON – The biggest event for this weekend is the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. Traffic will be affected in the District, Arlington, and Bethesda.

The Boo! Run for Life and the National Law Enforcement Run to Remember are scheduled for Sunday as well.

For the second weekend in a row, a full closure is planned on the George Washington Parkway, and a long term ramp closure is scheduled for I-66.

With track work on the Red and Green lines only, Metro rail delays won’t be as extensive as they have been in recent weeks.

Read on for the details, and have a great weekend!

Susan G. Komen 3-Day

The Susan G. Komen 3-day walk event is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic will mostly be affected in the District, but some of the course routes go through Arlington, Rosslyn and Bethesda.

See a course map here.

Friday’s course will take participants from the D.C. Armory in Southeast along the Southwest Waterfront area, into Arlington and Rosslyn, then back into the District through Georgetown and Downtown before returning to the starting point.

Saturday’s walk begins at the U.S. Navy Memorial and takes participants past Dupont Circle, the National Zoo, and into Bethesda. Saturday’s walk ends in Adams Morgan.

Sunday’s walk begins at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to Georgetown, then to George Washington University, ending with a 4:30 p.m. closing ceremony at the Washington Monument.

Metro Construction Update

Metro rail will delay the start of weekend construction, originally scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Friday, to accommodate Nationals fans traveling home after the game Friday night. Construction is expected to start after the game traffic ends and will continue through Sunday.

Here’s the update from Metro:

Red Line

  • Trains will single track between Grosvenor and Twinbrook, also between NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten.
  • Red Line trains between Glenmont and Shady Grove will operate every 20 minutes.
  • Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, additional Red Line trains will operate between Grosvenor and NoMa-Gallaudet, providing service about every 10 minutes between those stations.
  • Delays of at least 15 minutes are expected.

Green Line

  • Trains will single track between Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza.
  • Throughout the weekend, trains between Greenbelt and Branch Avenue will operate every 16 minutes.
  • Delays of at least 10 minutes are expected.

Yellow Line

  • Due to track work on the Green Line north of Fort Totten, all Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square only.
  • Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Square should use Green Line trains to complete their trip.

George Washington Memorial Parkway closure

Weather permitting, rock stabilization work along the George Washington Memorial Parkway will result in a full closure of the two northbound lanes between Spout Run and Chain Bridge beginning at 7 p.m. Friday until 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Detours will be posted, variable message boards have been placed, and alternate routes are strongly advised.

Motorists should take Route 50 west or exit at Spout Run Parkway to Route 29 south and follow I-66 west to I-495 to access the Beltway.

Another full weekend closure is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 20 and 21. Additional information about the project and future closures can be found here .

I-95/I-395 HOV closure

Starting at 11 p.m. and continuing through 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, the Interstate 95 and Interstate 395 High Occupancy Vehicle lanes will be closed between Dumfries Road and Duke Street.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, HOV lanes will reopen in the northbound direction.

I-66 HOV ramp closure

Scheduled for Friday, the left High Occupancy Vehicle lane from eastbound I-66 to the Inner Loop of I-495 will close until the I-495 Express Lanes open later this year.

All drivers will have to use the right exit ramp from eastbound I-66 to access the Inner Loop of I-495.

With the loss of the HOV ramp, expect additional delays on I-66 during your commute.

Chain Bridge Road overnight closure

In Tysons Corner, Rt. 123/Chain Bridge Road is scheduled for an overnight closure from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.

All lanes will be closed in both directions between Scotts Crossing Road and Captial One Drive.

Beltway construction update

Overnight road work continues on both loops of the Capital Beltway between Interstate 66 and Georgetown Pike. Expect a minimum of two lanes getting by between 9:30 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

After midnight, temporary total closures are possible for up to 30 minutes at a time. All lanes should reopen by 8 a.m.
